“ Family owned and hidden on a main street- I recently started going to Taihei and have now grown to like smaller mom/pop sushi shops. Workers are accommodating, super knowledgable about the menu & always polite. Each time we've had dinner here, fish were always fresh and their rice bowls are super filling and shareable! I recommend the donkatsu! Sometimes they may run out of certain fish during dinner times, just be sure to ask. Parking: we always park on the neighboring street and just walk over. Food: We always order the usual - salmon, tuna, yellowtail, mackerel, halibut ; everything is always fresh. Nice rice to fish ratios. They even have a bar if you're a party of just 1! ”

“ My go to sushi spot in Monterey park. Fish quality is always good. My favorite is their scallop but they drizzle with some yuzu. I also like their fish special meal. It comes with grilled fish, sashimi and soup. I don't think I ever get disappointed from their order before. Would def recommend. Parking is on the street but usually there are bunch spot. ”

“ I am so glad we discovered Taihei! We love this traditional Japanese restaurant and all the dishes we've tried. The raw fish is fresh and buttery, cooked items are prepared with love and waiters and waitresses are always so kind--what more could one want? I highly recommend the sukiyaki udon, sushi combo sets and bentos--we normally opt for the sashimi and salmon teriyaki. ”

“ Easily the most authentic sushi experience in town with ambiance that takes you back about two decades. Inside the charming establishment, are about 4 4-seater booths, 3 4 seater tabletops, and of course the bar seats to behold the work of the two sushi chefs we had today. The uni is by far the best uni I've ever had, maintaining gelatinous form but disintegrating palpably in your mouth upon tasting, almost as if taken fresh from the uni there and then. Additionally, the toro belly was incredibly fresh, and the house wasabi tucked between the bed of rice and fish complemented the flavors nicely. The masago for our rainbow roll was inside the roll itself, which was a nice little flair I was unaccustomed to. A surprising star of the show was the beef duo sukiyaki, with its mixture of carrots, white onion, tofu, cabbage, and rich slices of beef provided a nice warm touch to our meal. Although much more pricy than the other sushi restaurants in the area, it is a worthy celebratory experience for the quality alone. The staff was kind and the ambiance was pleasant. ”

“ Been coming to Taihei for years and the food and service never disappoints. There's nearby street parking with a small lot in the back, once you're inside, it's a bit tight, but gives you a feel like you're in Japan. The fish and fried tempura here is spot on. It's a bit higher than your typical mom&pop restaurant, but the quality is worth it. Knife skills are exceptional, portioning is favorable, and most importantly, taste is top-notch. Batter is on crisp and light- definitely great vegetable tempura! The monkfish liver is fresh, flavorful, and balanced with green onion and other pops of acidity. Finally, service is attentive and friendly! ”

“ Came here with family to celebrate a birthday. My one family member was in a wheelchair. It's a tiny restaurant, so it's a bit of tight squeeze getting her in/out, but the staff was so very kind and helpful in getting us through the experience. Tip: if you will also bring someone with mobility challenges, I highly recommend having someone ask the staff to let them through the backdoor. They are very accommodating and you will not have to overcome the incline at the front door. We each enjoyed our sukiyaki and chirashi-zushi. My uni nigiri was so plump and just melted. Good stuff. This is Japanese comfort food, so if you're hoping for fancy; this won't be it. For lunch combos, btw: level set your expectations appropriately. Restaurants offer lunch combos for a modest price to keep their stock turned over. If you're looking for the best pieces of fish, then don't be surprised that you should have paid for the full-priced entree version. Just sayin'. ”

“ One of our favorite sushi place in SGV!! I have been to Tahei for years. Just realized that I never wrote a review on it. Definitely one of the hidden gem in Monterey park. A very traditional Japanese sushi place with one of freshest fish that you can found anywhere. We always order tons of sushi from them. Price is reasonable. Special MP items like sweet shrimp, uni and toro are all exceptional food and reasonable price as well. With sweet shrimp, they still give you an option to cook the heads with miso soup or deep fried. (Definitely pick the soup!) Service is excellent. They always check on you regularly. Pretty rare for Asian restaurants One thing to notice, they are Very popular. On weekend, they will be completely full by 5pm. No reservation. If you hate waiting, you got to come around 4ish. There were a pretty long line by the line we got out before 6pm! ”
